Every hairstylist can remember the moment they became fascinated with hair as well as the adoration for creativity that it inspires. The tale was no different for U.S. Marine Corps veteran Kristyl Rodrigues who discovered her passion for hair while enrolled at Bellus Academy’s school of cosmetology in Poway, California. There Kristyl was studying cosmetology and pursuing an experienced beauty education. In their own story, there’s a valuable message that could be shared. “It doesn’t matter in places you begin or the method that you begin. I would like to have the ability to spark that passion into people where we’re causeing this to be industry ten times better, we’re gaining knowledge from our past and we’re carrying on that legacy,” shared Kristyl. The following is her story.

First: Inspiration Can Strike Anywhere
Kristyl joined the Marine Corps in 2014 and was enlisted at the chronilogical age of 19. Her first duty station is at Okinawa, Japan, as well as an area operation in Korea. Every Sunday during Kristyl’s period in Korea, a barber would check out the site and present haircuts on the Marines. However, this happened: “I was at a tent doing my personal hair,” shares Kristyl. “I definitely do shape ups and line ups for me personally, nothing too crazy, when I were built with a Marine Sergeant reach me and ask me for a haircut. I had never cut anybody’s hair before but I jumped right into it anf the husband found themselves loving it…and along with his outreach and leadership, literally the following day, I had 13 Marines arranged for me personally.”

This can be the first moment that Kristyl considered barbering like a future career-she settled on charging $5 a haircut which could it have been. Which has a strong intrinsic motivation and entrepreneurial spirit, she worked overnight shifts on guard duty from 12a.m. to 8a.m., then cut hair through the days. What Kristyl learned was profound: Hairdressers touch more hearts than heads and each time you service litigant, there’s impact.

The effect of your Haircut
“As a Marine, the factors for appearance are at an all-time high. The uniform must be squared away and ironed. Everything should be flush, measured properly-there’s lots of attention to detail,” shares Kristyl. “I was considering Marines from head to feet. It tore up my heart because we’re the best possible people of this nation and now we must be walking around as such. That’s the location where the impact i believe and heart originated, and I thought about being capable of transmit that through my hands to the people around me…and you can keep them walk around feeling proud and good from head to toe, and representing this nation as a result.”

Similarities In Service: Military & Barbering
After coming back from service, Kristyl asked herself exactly what the next challenge and chapter in her own life will be. That’s when she chose to pursue her education like a barber at Bellus Academy. Studying under her very own history and excited, she found many similarities in their service and serving as a barber.
