Every hairstylist can remember the moment they became attracted to hair and the adoration for creativity that it inspires. The story had not been different for U.S. Marine Corps veteran Kristyl Rodrigues who discovered her desire for hair while enrolled at Bellus Academy’s school of cosmetology in Poway, California. There Kristyl was studying cosmetology and pursuing an expert beauty education. In their own story, there’s a valuable message which can be shared. “It doesn’t matter in places you begin or the method that you begin. I want to be capable of spark that passion into people where we’re thus, making this industry 10 times better, we’re gaining knowledge from our background and we’re carrying on that legacy,” shared Kristyl. A symptom: Inspiration Can Strike Anywhere
Kristyl joined the Marine Corps in 2014 and was enlisted with the chronilogical age of 19. Her first duty station is at Okinawa, Japan, as well as a field operation in Korea. Weekly during Kristyl’s amount of time in Korea, a barber would go to the site and present haircuts on the Marines. Then again, this happened: “I what food was in a tent doing my own hair,” shares Kristyl. “I would certainly do shape ups and line ups personally, nothing too crazy, once i had a Marine Sergeant come up to me and ask me for the haircut. I needed never cut anybody’s hair before on the other hand jumped straight into it and he ended up loving it…and regarding his outreach and leadership, literally the next day, I’d 13 Marines arranged personally.”
This is actually the first moment that Kristyl considered barbering as being a future career-she concluded on charging $5 a haircut understanding that was it. Using a strong intrinsic motivation and entrepreneurial spirit, she worked overnight shifts on guard duty from 12a.m. to 8a.m., then cut hair in the days. What Kristyl learned was profound: Hairdressers touch more hearts than heads and each time you service litigant, there’s impact.
The outcome of an Haircut
“As a Marine, the factors for appearance are near an all-time high. The uniform must be squared away and ironed. Everything needs to be flush, measured properly-there’s a great deal of awareness of detail,” shares Kristyl. “I was looking at Marines from top to bottom. It tore up my heart because we’re the optimum people on this nation and that we should be walking around therefore. That’s the place that the impact produce and heart came from, and i also seriously considered in a position to transmit that through my hands to individuals around me…and have them walk around feeling proud and good from head to feet, and representing this nation as such.”
Similarities In Service: Military & Barbering
After returning from service, Kristyl asked herself just what the next challenge and chapter in her life would be. That’s when she decided to pursue her education like a barber at Bellus Academy. Learning from her own past and excited, she found many similarities in her own service and serving as a barber.
