There’s sex work, webcamming doesn’t have the best reputation. It’s often viewed as exploitation or even a last-resort hustle to repay debt, but Reed Amber, 26, explains how webcam models are just your average self-employed freelancers sticking with the same level of agency and independence anyone else.

Model, producer and co-creator of YouTube channel ComeCurious, Reed is basically the physical embodiment of sex positivity, which she defines as “trying to make people seem like what they’re doing and what they’re into isn’t wrong, it’s normal and it’s absolutely fine.” She’s a huge advocate for removing stigma and taboos around sex, so we trapped along with her to explore webcamming, a line of sex work that’s seldom talked about.

So why do you think some men, and possibly women also, prefer it to porn?
“There’s much free porn i feel webcamming is much more of your personal one-on-one. You are able to search online and locate any ol’ stuff, but webcamming is more personal; it’s tailored exactly to what you would like along with what you’re searching for. You’re not sharing it with 100 thousand others. This is your show. Quite often you build up a relationship, I speak with you as being a friend and that i respect you like a person. ‘How has your entire day been, what do you get from the shops, what are you cooking for dinner…’ it’s such as an online relationship”

…So it’s kind of like the ‘girlfriend experience’?
“Yes, it’s very much like the girlfriend experience. But that also depends on what the webcam model is similar to plus just what the person paying is much like because everybody wants something different.”

Have you ever had say no to a request?
“I’m one of the cam girls who does rarely say no. I’ve always aspired to try a new challenge, but that’s not since i felt like I had to. It’s just personally things i might like to do. I wish to tick stuff off my list, I want to you must do everything once specially when looking at sex positivity. Even if it’s something I’m not really into, I’d still give it a go. If I didn’t like it, I’d resemble ‘sorry, I’m definitely not into that.’ But there’s lots of people that could avoid a lot of stuff.”

What are the really common requests that you will get?
“It depends on the profile that you setup because once you create a profile, you’re posting somewhat bio with regards to you, and read could be seen as little more ‘out there’. I’m available to anything, like roleplay, so much of the time I recieve roleplay requests, more even though I’ve found them fun regardless of how unusual or bizarre they are. What excites me are uncommon and weird requests which you wouldn’t really come across. Life’s too boring otherwise”

How does someone react when you tell them the things you do?
“I get yourself a mix of emotions. Mostly people react positively because of the way I discuss it. It’s so different if you’re really shy and timid and quiet about it. It immediately emits this concept of ‘oh they’re not completely happy with it.’

Basically you are free to turn out to be sex-positive self for your full potential…
“Exactly! That’s where I received my first taste of sex positivity. Going through my relationships all night to school I used to be like ‘woah, nobody thinks generate an income do, I need to be weird’. But being a webcam model, I realised most people are into something different, they only seem like they can’t talk about it.”
