Health and Vaccinations

There aren’t any mandatory vaccinations for travelers to Tajikistan though you should be up-to-date on Typhoid Tetanus Polio and Hepatitis A. Malaria is prevalent in certain areas of Tajikistan which is why we advise you consult your physician or travel center regarding the appropriate immunisations and preventative treatments.

Cultural Sensitivity

You are likely to meet locals, each with their unique customs and traditions. It is your responsibility to be respectful and considerate towards locals. You can always count on your tour-leaders or guides to help you.

One thing to remember about traveling through Central Asia is that most regions, including the cities and towns, are much more relaxed attitude to Islam than their neighbours to the south of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Central Asia is an Muslim area , and it’s important to be cautious in specific regions. Although both women and men can wear shorts and T-shirts in the cities, they must not be wearing long sleeves or T-shirts. However, anyone visiting active mosques should wear trousers that do not go below the knees, and tops that cover the shoulders. A head scarf is also suggested for women. While on this tour, we’ll be travelling in quite remote areas that are not frequently visited by tourists. Local people tend to dress modestly, therefore it is probable that you’ll feel comfortable wearing conservative clothing.

Language & Religion

The official language of Tajikistan is Tajik. Russian is used to conduct business and for communication.

The majority of the people follow Sunni Islam, with the minority of the population following Russian Orthodox, Catholicism, Buddhism and Judaism.

Food and drinks

This tour focuses mainly on soups and meats. In more remote and higher altitude places vegetables can be hard to come by. But, there is a wide selection of dried fruits and nuts you can taste.

With regard to alcohol, the choice is mostly limited to vodka or beer, so those looking for something different – Scotch or Gin for instance – needs to buy it duty free and bring it out. It can be difficult to find mixer drinks such as tonic water.
